Why We Chose the Allures 45.9 Aluminium with Lifting Keel

Our research on microplastic abundance and distribution will take us across varied marine environments — from open-ocean gyres to shallow coastal areas. The Allures 45.9 offers a unique combination of safety, versatility, and performance that makes it ideally suited for this mission.

1. Aluminium Hull for Safety and Durability

  • Impact resistance: Aluminium is far more resilient to floating debris, ice, or accidental groundings than fiberglass — essential for long ocean voyages in remote areas.

  • Corrosion protection: With proper maintenance, aluminium withstands harsh saltwater conditions over decades.

  • Eco-responsibility: Aluminium hulls can be recycled at end of life, aligning with our sustainability values.

2. Lifting Keel for Versatility

  • Deep draft for performance: When lowered, the keel provides excellent upwind sailing efficiency for fast ocean passages.

  • Shallow draft for access: When raised, the keel reduces draft significantly, allowing access to shallow bays, lagoons, and estuaries — critical for sampling microplastics near coasts, river mouths, and mangroves.

3. Expedition-Ready Design

  • Ample storage: Space for scientific equipment, water sampling gear, and plankton nets.

  • Separate work areas: Comfortably accommodates researchers with dedicated areas for analysis and living quarters.

  • Long-range autonomy: Equipped for extended voyages without resupply, ideal for working in remote gyre centers.

4. Proven Ocean-Crossing Capability

  • Designed for blue-water cruising, the Allures 45.9 has an established track record in long-distance, offshore voyages.

  • Stable, comfortable motion at sea reduces fatigue for crew and allows scientific operations during transit.
